Blue & yellow butterflies miniature sgraffito vessel

This is the beginnings of a new direction for my work and I’m excited by these tiny miniature colourful pieces. Inspiration was taken from the common blue butterflies we see on Portland all the time.

Every unique design created starts life as a detailed line drawing. Each piece has been thrown on the wheel, left to slightly dry and then goes through many different processes to create my intricate images onto the damp clay surface.

My decoration is a combination of painting with clay slips, carving and using sgraffito to draw the delicate lines onto each design. This takes many hours of work and no two pieces will ever look the same.

Once completed these are left to dry for a few weeks and fired twice in an electric kiln. This piece is unglazed inside and out and will not hold water.

The decoration continues across the base which is a very unusual and distinctive feature of my ceramic art.

This piece measures 9cm high / 4.5cm wide / foot 2.cm / 100 grams
